Necton SA is the oldest company in Europe dedicated to the production and commercialization of microalgae, and over the last few decades it has been developing new industrial-scale production technologies in-house. It is leader in the production and commercialization of traditional salt and in marine microalgae biotechnology, producing algal biomass specially for the aquaculture and cosmetics sectors. Recently, Necton has significantly increased its microalgae production capacity within the scope of an European project (INTESUSAL), having an industrial unit with state-of-the-art technology. Currently, four modular 90 m3 photobioreactors guarantee an efficient and sustained production of a wide variety of microalgae species with high biotechnological application. These cultivation systems allow the production of microalgae biomass with high biochemical and biological quality. The company has a unique and distinctive experience in cultivation of more than 30 microalgae species (e.g., Nannochloropsis sp., Tetraselmis sp., Tisochrysis lutea, Phaeodactylum tricornutum, Skeletonema costatum, Pavlova sp., among others).

Necton is committed to provide top quality and sustainable products for aquaculture, cosmetics, aquaria, food and feed with PHYTOBLOOM® brand since 1997. Necton’s activities have been blended with a continuous Research and Development throughout the years towards Innovation. The company has a highly specialized and qualified team of marine biologists, microbiologists and engineers, with extensive experience in the implementation and development of national and international projects. Currently, Necton is targeting the development of novel microalgae products for zebrafish husbandry and aquaculture sector.

Its history, experience and collaborations raised Necton to the status of one of the leading European companies in Microalgae Biotechnology. Necton strategic objectives target specialized product development developed with carbon neutral activities based on circular economy concept towards sustainable and specialized products.

Instituto Português do Mar e Atmosfera (IPMA) has a Pilot Fish Farming Station in Olhão (EPPO), a unique and leading aquaculture infrastructure in the country, designed to carry out research, development and experimental demonstration on a pilot scale. IPMA is an institute of excellency in public research in Portugal dedicated to research in the areas of the sea and atmosphere. The unit occupies an area of about 7 ha of the Ria Formosa Natural Park in Marim, comprising a maternity area (with breeding stock of 9 species of marine fish adapted for captivity), a pre-fattening area and a fattening area in earth ponds, in a monoculture, polyculture or multitrophic system. It supports technological development, innovation, services and the dissemination of results, including the preservation, valorization and production of marine resources. The EPPO is dimensioned in order to carry out, on a pre-industrial scale, production trials of species with current or potential interest for national aquaculture. In these facilities, the main objective is research in the field of marine organisms aquaculture, with a special focus on the study of production systems/methods, reproduction, nutrition, ontogeny of larval development, physiology, pathology, animal welfare, with a strong focus on diversifying the species produced. This unit plays an important role in both professional and academic training, regularly welcoming students from national and international educational establishments as well as members of the productive sector. Research and activities developed at the EPPO are supported through projects within the scope of national and international funding programs. The scientific activity at the EPPO also excels in national and international collaborations with other research institutes and universities, thus promoting the exchange of knowledge, as well as the mobility of researchers.

Piscicultura Vale da Lama, Lda (PVL) is a nationally recognized aquaculture company with activity since 1989 in the aquaculture production of sea bass and sea bream in earth ponds. In 1994, it was expanded by founding another annexed company – Aqualvor – forming a Consortium that conquered a position of reference in the Portuguese market, being proud to produce about 500 tons/year of high quality fish, which allows it to offer its customers, throughout the whole year, the two species in different sizes, from 400g to 1500g, at a sale price well above the market average. The company has stood out for its innovative and pioneering character, which has allowed it to create, over 31 years, a qualified work team capable of developing a continuous technological research activity. In recent years, the company has been focused on hiring highly qualified professionals. About 50% of employees are graduates or have higher education. It has a young and dynamic team made up of 34 employees. Its continuous growth in terms of produced biomass, always supported by the application of innovative techniques and technologies, has recently motivated the expansion of its activities to explore another unit near Olhão, this one with around 10.7 ha. The aquaculture activity is extremely challenging at several levels, which has encouraged PVL’s participation in several projects: Aquality, Dirdamix, Microbioma, MicrobeModel, AquaWales, Pathospill and ValorMar. In addition to these, several R&D works have been carried out internally in the development of new rations, comparison of different commercial rations, parasitic control strategies, cultivation of new species such as bream, sole and croaker.

University of Algarve (UALG) is a higher education institution with about 7,750 students. The institution is focused on teaching and research on Life Sciences / Technology / Health, Administration and Economics, Earth and Sea Sciences and Social Sciences areas. In UALG there are Research and Development Centers in the areas of Marine Sciences, Biomedicine, Electronics, Chemistry, Arts and Communication and Social Sciences. With regard to marine sciences, UALG has a center dedicated to the study of the sea and marine organisms, the Centre for Marine Sciences (CCMAR), to which the researchers participating in the project are part of. The center has been classified as Excellent in the last evaluation carried out by FCT. In 2015, UALG had a team of 768 faculty members permanently linked to the institution and researchers involved in 90 R&D projects. Fostered by international interpersonal and institutional networks and by projects developed in cooperation with other universities, UALG intends to update curriculum content and promote innovation, considering these synergies as an opportunity, not only to contribute to its development academic research, but also to promote innovation, increase the incubation of research projects in order to achieve the ultimate goal of higher education institutions: accumulate academic knowledge and demonstrate your excellence in investigation. Finally, the role played by UALG in creating technology-based companies, made up of researchers and master’s students and PhD, who value the results of their research in the market.
